The Department of Artificial Intelligence, Faculty of Information & Communication Technology is accepting applications for the post of a Research Support Officer that will work on the Autonomous Diagnostic System (ADS) project that is funded by the Malta Enterprise R&D 2014-2020 Support Measure and in collaboration with Corel Malta Ltd.

Corel Corporation is one of the world’s top software companies and boasts some of the industry’s best-known graphics, productivity and digital media products.

The ADS project aims at developing a prototype that leverages on Artificial Intelligence as a plug-in for the Parallels Remote Application Server (RAS) integrated solution. The developed module will feature also advanced log-analytics and monitoring of the data generated by RAS and its infrastructure.

1. Applicants must be in possession of a PhD in an area related to Artificial Intelligence and have a strong knowledge of Machine Learning (Deep Learning), Data Science and Data Mining as applied to large-scale data. The applicant should be passionate about building intelligent systems, highly motivated to work independently and as a member of a team and have excellent communication skills (a good command of the English Language is essential). Prior industrial experience will be considered an asset. If successful, the candidate will be employed as a Research Support Officer III.

2. Applicants in possession of a Master’s degree or a Bachelor’s degree in an area related to Artificial Intelligence or Computer Science will also be considered. In the case of the former, the successful appointee will be employed as a Research Support Office II and will have the possibility to enrol for a PhD in a project-research related area. In the case of the latter, the appointee will be employed as a Research Support Officer I and will be required to enrol into a postgraduate degree in Artificial Intelligence (by research) focusing on a research area related to the project.

4. The full-time post is for a period of 15 months. The initial remuneration for a successful candidate in the position of a Research Support Officer III be that of €31,200 per annum. A successful candidate accepted as a Research Support Officer II or as a Research Support Officer I will have an initial remuneration of €24,960 per annum and €20,800 per annum respectively. Upon the successful termination of the project Corel Malta Ltd will consider offering the candidate a post within the company.

5. The Research Support Officer may also be required to work on other projects undertaken by the Department of Artificial Intelligence within the Faculty of Information & Communication Technology.

Further Information

1. The project will focus on the area of automated diagnostic systems and its application within the context of distributed environments. Further information about the Project may be obtained from Dr Charlie Abela: charlie.abela@um.edu.mt.

2. The Research Support Officer will be expected to carry out the following tasks:
a. produce deliverables within the stipulated time frames as specified in the project description;
b. maintain detailed reports and abide to all conditions imposed by the project;
c. assist in the dissemination process with the stakeholders via workshops/seminars as required by the project;
d. endeavour in generating technical and scientific conference/journal papers;
e. attend online meetings/conferences as the need arises; and
f. perform research and any other project related task as directed by the project coordinator and key experts;

3. The appointee will be expected to work at such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities.

4. The selection procedure will involve:
a. scrutiny of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application);
b. shortlisting; and
c. an interview and / or extended interview.

5. The post is for a period of 15 months, which will be subject to a probationary period and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
